About the Winery

Skerlj (also spelled Škerk) is a winery in the Carso (Karst) region of Friuli Venezia Giulia, where Matej Skerlj and his sister Kristina began making their own wines in 2004 from native grapes including Malvasia, Terrano, and Vitovska. The family's five acres of vineyards are carved from surrounding forest on thin 'terra rossa' iron-rich soils with solid limestone subsoils, and their wines are fermented with indigenous yeasts, aged in a hand-carved limestone cellar, and bottled unfined and unfiltered, expressing the dramatic terroir of this limestone plateau.
