About the Winery

Jean-Louis Dutraive, known as 'the heart of Beaujolais,' is a legendary figure in the region and one of the pioneers of organic viticulture and natural winemaking in Fleurie. The Dutraive family purchased Domaine de la Grand'Cour in 1969, one of the oldest domaines in Fleurie. Jean-Louis joined his father in 1977 and took over in 1989. The estate encompasses 9.7 hectares divided between three contiguous terroirs in Fleurie—Clos de la Grand'Cour (a 6.5-hectare clos), Chapelle des Bois, and Champagne—plus 1.6 hectares in Brouilly where the family originated. Certified organic since 2009, the domaine has been practicing organic for decades. Dutraive's wines are made with hand harvesting, whole-cluster carbonic fermentation without added sulfur, native yeasts, and no intervention. In 2016, after losing 90% of the crop to frost and hail, Jean-Louis and his children Justin, Ophélie, and Lucas started the Famille Dutraive négociant project. Now in his retirement, his children have taken the reins, continuing his legacy of producing some of Beaujolais' most aromatically unique wines.
