About the Winery

Château des Bachelards was founded around 1100 by the Benedictine monks of Cluny, making it one of the oldest estates in Beaujolais. Located in Fleurie, the 12-hectare estate includes 5 contiguous hectares surrounding the château in the Fleurie AOC, as well as plots in Beaujolais Villages, Saint-Amour, and Moulin-à-Vent. The estate has been chemical-free since 2007 and is certified organic (FR-BIO-15) and biodynamic (Demeter and Biodyvin). Alexandra de Vazeilles, the current owner, is a pioneer of biodynamic farming in the region. The estate does not practice carbonic maceration or use artificial yeasts, instead producing wines through long, natural vinifications with indigenous yeasts. The Clos des Bachelards is the only monopoly of Fleurie, a unique walled vineyard cultivated like a garden. The wines have received exceptional critical acclaim, with the Clos des Bachelards cuvée awarded 97-98/100 by James Suckling.
