About the Winery

Château Fortia is one of the oldest and most historic estates in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, with origins dating back to the 18th century. The estate takes its name from the Marquis de Fortia who acquired it in the mid-18th century. The property holds an important place in French wine history - it was here that Baron Le Roy de Boiseaumarie was instrumental in establishing the Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée (AOC) system. The 32-hectare vineyard is planted with the 13 authorized grape varieties of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, with a notably high proportion of Syrah (around 40%), giving the wines exceptional aging potential. The vines are situated on gentle south-facing slopes with varied soils including sand, clay, limestone, and the famous galets roulés (rounded pebbles) that store heat during the day and release it at night. The estate produces both red and white Châteauneuf-du-Pape wines that are consistent, classic expressions of this prestigious terroir.
