Domaine du Closel
About the Winery
Domaine du Closel is located at Château des Vaults in Savennières, a historic property dating back to 1495. The estate has been managed by a succession of remarkable women: Marque de Las Cases du Closel (first woman to run an AOC), her niece Michèle Bazin de Jessey who developed the vineyard, and since 2001, Evelyne de Pontbriand who took over after a career teaching French literature worldwide. Evelyne converted the estate to organic viticulture (certified in 2006) and received full biodynamic certification (Biodyvin) as of the 2015 vintage. The estate covers 16 hectares with 14 dedicated to vines, including prestigious parcels 'Les Caillardières' and 'Clos du Papillon.' The vineyard sits on schist and sandstone soils enriched with volcanic rocks (quartz, phtanites, rhyolites). The estate produces exclusively Chenin Blanc wines including Savennières, Anjou Rouge, and Coteaux du Layon. Evelyne served as president of the Savennières appellation for many years.
“A women-led estate since 1962 at historic Château des Vaults, producing celebrated Savennières Chenin Blanc from biodynamic vineyards.”
