Earl p. Charlin
About the Winery
EARL P. Charlin refers to Patrick Charlin, a legendary natural wine producer in Montagnieu, in the Bugey region of the French Alps (Savoie). Patrick established his domaine in 1980 and became known as one of the most thoughtful and meticulous vignerons in Bugey. He was a rare champion of the Altesse grape, particularly Montagnieu Altesse, from the 1990s onward. His vineyards were grassed down and he gradually converted to organic farming, though he never sought certification. He preferred hand harvesting. After studying in Beaune, Patrick worked in Champagne before settling in Bugey. He retired after the 2017 vintage, having made wine for four decades. His wines, particularly his Roussette du Bugey Montagnieu and sparkling wines, were celebrated for their aging potential and complexity.
“A legendary natural wine producer in Bugey, celebrated for his masterful Altesse wines from Montagnieu over four decades until his retirement in 2017.”
