Cos d'Estournel, 33180 Saint-Estèphe, France

About the Winery

Cos d'Estournel is perched at the summit of a gravelly hillside dominating the Lazaret valley and the famous D2 wine route. The estate surprises visitors with its architecture, a mix of oriental pagoda and neoclassicism, due to Louis-Gaspard d'Estournel, the 'Maharajah of Saint-Estèphe,' who founded the domaine in the early 19th century. The estate has been a 2nd Grand Cru Classé since 1855 and has belonged to Michel Reybier since 2000. Following the founder's avant-garde vision, a purely gravity-fed cellar was built in 2008, the first in Bordeaux, allowing grapes to be treated with true respect. The vineyard covers about 100 hectares on a multitude of parcels with mostly gravel and clay-limestone soils. Grape varieties are 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc, and 2% Petit Verdot.

A legendary 2nd Grand Cru Classé estate with iconic pagoda architecture and gravity-fed winemaking.
