Sa baron philippe de Rothschild (Ch. Mouton Rothschild)

Pauillac, Bordeaux, France

About the Winery

Acquired in 1853 by the Rothschild family, Château Mouton Rothschild is inseparable from the personality of Baron Philippe. Taking the helm in 1922, he restored the estate to its former glory through modernization (including the famous 'Grand Chai'). His efforts culminated in the historic 1973 revision of the 1855 Classification, elevating Mouton to 1er Cru Classé status. Baron Philippe was also a pioneer in estate bottling (from 1926) and commissioned artists to illustrate his labels. From 1988, his daughter Philippine continued his work until her passing in 2014. Her children, Camille and Philippe Sereys de Rothschild and Julien de Beaumarchais de Rothschild, have since succeeded her. Philippe Dhalluin has been managing director since 2003. The 84-hectare vineyard sits on the famous 'Plateau de Mouton' gravel mound, and a new winery was inaugurated in 2013.

The only estate ever elevated to 1er Cru Classé status (1973), famous for artist-designed labels and iconic Pauillac wines since 1853.
