About the Winery

Situated north of Saint-Estèphe, Châteaux d'Aurilhac et la Fagotte is a 21-hectare estate acquired in 1983 by Dutchman Erik Nieuwaal. The clay-limestone terroir with gravel layers is particularly well-suited to both Merlot (49%) and Cabernet Sauvignon. The estate's cellar master Jan Nieuwaal has diversified the planting with a touch of Petit Verdot. Located in the Haut-Médoc appellation, the estate has been managed by Jan-Willem Nieuwaal since 2013. The vineyard was replanted in 1983 using rootstocks better adapted to the clay, sand and gravel soils to produce high-quality wines with classic Bordeaux characteristics. The entire harvest is hand-sorted before entering stainless-steel temperature-controlled vats, and wines are aged for about one year in oak barrels.
