Château Pavie Macquin

About the Winery

The estate was founded by Albert Macquin (1852-1911), who studied viticulture in Paris and Montpellier and became a specialist in grafting and rootstocks. Saint-Émilion owes him the use of grafted plants that saved the vineyards devastated by phylloxera. The name Pavie Macquin comes from Albert Macquin, the grandfather of the current owners. Nicolas Thienpont has been managing the property since 1994, alongside consultant Stéphane Derenoncourt. The 15-hectare vineyard sits on a single block on the exceptional clay-limestone plateau of Saint-Émilion, surrounded by three other 1st Grand Cru Classé estates: Troplong Mondot, Pavie and Trottevieille. Ranked Premier Grand Cru Classé B since 2006, the vineyard is planted with 84% Merlot, 14% Cabernet Franc and 2% Cabernet Sauvignon. The estate also produces a second wine, Les Chênes de Macquin.
