About the Winery

Schieferkopf is a prestigious Alsace wine project created by Michel Chapoutier, the renowned Rhône winemaker, in 2006. After searching for three years for the perfect terroir, Chapoutier settled on the Lieu-dit Schieferberg in Bernardvillé in the Bas-Rhin department, purchasing 5 hectares on the only strip of blue schist in Alsace, dating back to the Precambrian period. The vineyards are on steep southeast-facing hillsides of the Vosges mountains at 380 meters elevation, ideal for balancing acidity and minerality in Alsatian Riesling. The first vintage was launched in 2011. Schieferkopf produces single-vineyard Riesling selections that are a perfect expression of the unique schist terroir, along with Gewürztraminer, Silvaner, and Pinot Noir.
