Champagne Mercier, Epernay

68 Avenue de Champagne, 51200 Épernay, France

About the Winery

Champagne Mercier is one of the most famous Champagne houses in Épernay, founded by Eugène Mercier at the age of just 20. Mercier revolutionized the world of champagne with his vision to make champagne accessible to all without sacrificing quality. He was one of the first in the region to introduce electricity to his cellars in 1886 and presented a giant blending vat at the 1889 World's Fair in Paris that rivaled the Eiffel Tower. The house is known for its unique train tour through 18 kilometers of cellars, 30 meters beneath the chalky soil of Épernay. Visitors board a laser-guided train to explore the cellars, discover bas-relief carvings by sculptor Gustave Navlet, and learn about champagne production. The visitor center is located on the famous Avenue de Champagne, just 1.5 hours from Paris. The house also has over 249 hectares of its own vines. Tours are available in 11 languages, including sign language, and are wheelchair accessible.
