Yunnan

Himalayan vineyards at the roof of the wine world, home to Ao Yun and some of China's most elegant wines.

Overview

Yunnan's wine country centers on the Shangri-La region in the foothills of the Himalayas, where vineyards climb to 2,600 meters above sea level and beyond. The high altitude, steep slopes, and strong ultraviolet light create a unique terroir with cool temperatures and long ripening seasons despite the relatively low latitude.

LVMH's Ao Yun project, along with local producers such as Zaxee and Shangri-La Winery, has brought international attention to the region. Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot dominate, with smaller amounts of Chardonnay and other varieties. The wines are typically elegant, aromatic, and finely structured.

Key Varietals

  • Cabernet SauvignonAn elegant, floral red with fine tannins from high-altitude Himalayan sites.
  • MerlotA supple, plum-scented red that ripens well in Yunnan's long growing season.
  • ChardonnayA crisp, mineral white from the region's coolest high-elevation sites.
  • MarselanA small but promising red that shows Yunnan's potential for distinctive varieties.
