Yecla

Overview

Yecla is a small, elevated wine region in northwestern Murcia with a harsh continental-Mediterranean climate. Vineyards lie between 535 and 800 meters on limestone soils, where hot days, cool nights, and minimal rainfall stress the vines into producing small, concentrated berries. Old bush vines of Monastrell are a hallmark of the region.

Monastrell dominates the plantings, producing dense, powerful reds with black fruit, licorice, and spice. Syrah, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon are used in blends, adding polish and complexity. Yecla has gained attention for wines that combine Mediterranean ripeness with surprising freshness.
