Overview

The Yarra Valley is the birthplace of Victorian wine and one of Australia's most captivating cool climate regions. Just an hour's drive east of Melbourne, the valley was first planted by Swiss settlers in 1838, with iconic estates such as Yering Station and St Huberts establishing a reputation that would endure for generations. After a mid-20th century decline, the region was revitalised in the 1960s and 70s by visionaries who recognised its extraordinary potential for Burgundian varieties.

The Yarra Valley is defined by its diversity. The Lower Yarra, with its warmer sites and grey clay loams, produces structured Cabernet Sauvignon and aromatic Shiraz. The Upper Yarra, higher and cooler, with elevations reaching beyond 400 metres and soils of clay loam over granite, is where Pinot Noir and Chardonnay truly shine. This sub-regional complexity has attracted some of Australia's most talented winemakers, and estates like Giant Steps, Oakridge, and Hoddles Creek have pushed the boundaries of what Australian cool climate wine can achieve.

Sparkling wine also holds a special place in the valley's heart, with Domaine Chandon and Yarrabank producing méthode traditionelle wines of exceptional finesse. Beyond the wines, the Yarra Valley is a cultural and gastronomic destination, offering acclaimed restaurants, artisan producers, and stunning natural scenery framed by the Dandenong Ranges. It is a region that balances heritage and innovation with effortless grace.
