Vipava Valley

A windy valley corridor where indigenous whites such as Zelen and Pinela meet Mediterranean freshness and Alpine cool.

Overview

Vipava Valley runs east-west from Nova Gorica toward the Vipava River gorge, acting as a corridor between the Adriatic and continental Europe. The Burja wind rushes through the valley, often exceeding 100 km/h, keeping grapes healthy and concentrating flavors. Elevations range from about 80 to 400 meters, with a sub-Mediterranean climate moderated by Alpine and continental influences.

Flysch soils of marl, sandstone, and clay dominate the valley, giving wines crisp acidity and stony minerality. Zelen and Pinela, varieties almost unique to the valley, lead the local identity, while Malvazija, Rebula, and international grapes add breadth. The region is especially prized for fresh, aromatic whites and elegant reds.

Key Varietals

  • ZelenA rare indigenous white variety with herbaceous, floral, and white-peach aromatics and a distinctive mineral backbone.
  • PinelaAn ancient, near-endemic white grape that produces delicate, crisp wines with green apple, pear, and floral notes.
  • MalvazijaA fragrant white variety making fresh, saline whites and textured skin-contact expressions in the valley's flysch soils.
  • MerlotA red variety that performs well in the valley's warm sites, producing structured, savory reds with herbal undertones.
