Villány Vineyards
Southern Hungary, near the Croatian border

Villány

Hungary's warm-climate red wine capital, known for polished Cabernet Franc and rich blends.

Overview

Villány is Hungary's southernmost and warmest wine region, a chain of limestone hills in the Pannon wine region close to the Croatian frontier. The sheltered southern slopes accumulate heat throughout the growing season, creating ideal conditions for fully ripened red grapes and full-bodied, structured wines.

The region was the first in Hungary to develop its own PDO system in 2006 and has built an international reputation on Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon. Villány's flagship wine is Vilmos Cabernet Franc, while Kadarka, Portugieser, and Kékfrankos add local color to the regional portfolio.

Key Varietals

  • Cabernet FrancVillány's signature red, producing ripe, silky wines with red pepper, cassis, and tobacco notes.
  • MerlotA plush, rounded red that adds body and plum fruit to Villány blends and single-vineyard wines.
  • PortugieserAn early-ripening red that yields fresh, juicy, everyday wines and balanced rosés.
  • KékfrankosA spicy, high-acid red that brings freshness and structure to Villány's warmer, richer cuvées.
