Overview
Valul lui Traian covers the southwest of Moldova and takes its name from the ancient Trajan's Wall that crosses the landscape. It is the country's warmest wine region, encompassing the Bugeac Plain, the forested Tigheci Hills, and the Prut River Terraces. The area benefits from a long growing season, abundant sunshine, and cooling influences from the nearby Black Sea and wooded uplands.
Chernozem soils, especially carbonate and common subtypes, dominate the region, often with loamy-clay textures that retain moisture in a relatively dry climate. Roughly sixty percent of plantings are red varieties, producing deeply colored, structured wines. The region is also celebrated for sweet fortified wines from historic micro-zones such as Ciumai and Trifești.
