Valle del Cauca, Colombia

Valle del Cauca

Tropical vineyards in Colombia's southwest, where altitude moderates the heat near the city of Cali.

Overview

Valle del Cauca is best known for sugarcane and Colombia's Pacific coast access, but the department's Andean foothills also host a small number of high-altitude vineyards. The tropical climate is moderated by elevation, allowing a short but viable growing season for grapes.

Production remains experimental and small-scale, with producers working mainly with internationally recognized varieties. The region represents Colombia's efforts to expand quality viticulture beyond the better-known Boyacá area into the country's southwestern mountains.

Key Varietals

  • Cabernet SauvignonA structured red from the region's highest, coolest vineyard sites.
  • MerlotA soft, fruity red that handles the warm days of the Cauca Valley.
  • ChardonnayA crisp white produced in small quantities at altitude.
  • Sauvignon BlancA fresh, citrusy white that retains acidity in the tropical climate.
