Valdepeñas

Overview

Valdepeñas is an old wine town and DO in southern Castilla-La Mancha, surrounded by the much larger La Mancha region. It sits at around 705 meters on a limestone plain with red clay and pebbly soils. The continental climate is extreme, with very hot summers, cold winters, and very low rainfall.

Tempranillo, locally called Cencibel, is the leading red grape, producing fruity young reds and more structured oak-aged wines. Airén, once dominant for bulk wine, is still widely planted, while Garnacha and Cabernet Sauvignon add blending depth. Valdepeñas has long been a source of reliable, affordable Spanish reds.
