Overview
Slovak Tokaj occupies the southeastern slopes of the Zemplín Hills, a small patch of the same volcanic terroir that continues across the border into Hungary. South, southeast, and southwest-facing vineyards soak up autumn sun, while morning mists rising from the Bodrog and Tisza rivers encourage the noble rot that defines the region's greatest wines.
The ancient cellars carved into volcanic tuff provide perfect ageing conditions for Tokajský výber, samorodné, esencia, and increasingly polished dry Furmint. Protected within the EU framework, Slovak Tokaj is produced in seven villages including Veľká Trňa, Malá Trňa, and Viničky, and regularly earns awards against international competition.
