Overview
Tartus lies along Syria's Mediterranean shoreline, receiving some of the highest rainfall in the country. The governorate mixes a narrow coastal plain with forested hills and basaltic plateaus inland, creating a patchwork of agricultural landscapes. Citrus groves and olive orchards dominate the lowlands, while scattered vineyards climb the humid slopes where drainage and altitude help vines escape summer humidity.
The climate is classic hot-summer Mediterranean, with mild, wet winters and warm, humid summers. Deep alluvial soils line the coast, while hill and mountain sites sit on calcareous and basaltic substrates that can produce fresh, mineral wines. Like much of Syria, Tartus has seen table-grape plantings expand at the expense of traditional wine varieties, yet its natural conditions remain among the most favorable in the country.
