Szekszárd Vineyards
Southern Hungary, on the eastern bank of the Danube

Szekszárd

Silky, spicy reds from loess hills, where Kadarka and Bikavér flourish in a warm Pannon climate.

Overview

Szekszárd lies in the Pannon wine region on rolling loess hills east of the Danube, where a near-Mediterranean climate produces some of Hungary's most elegant red wines. Together with Eger, it is one of only two regions permitted to produce Szekszárdi Bikavér, a spicy red blend built on Kékfrankos and Kadarka.

The region's signature style is silky and aromatic, with Kadarka, Kékfrankos, and Bikavér leading plantings. Family wineries have shaped Szekszárd's identity for generations, and the Szekszárd bottle, reserved for the district's main varieties, symbolizes the strong cooperation among local growers.

Key Varietals

  • KadarkaThe soul of Szekszárd, producing light-colored, fragrant reds with floral lift, pepper, and soft tannins.
  • KékfrankosA key component of Szekszárdi Bikavér, adding bright acidity, red berry fruit, and savory spice.
  • Cabernet FrancA structured red that contributes blackcurrant, herb, and graphite notes to blends and reserve wines.
  • MerlotA round, supple red that softens Bikavér and adds plum and chocolate depth to the region's blends.
