Overview
Sussex sits in the southeastern corner of England and has become the flagship of the modern English wine industry. Historic and new estates such as Nyetimber, Ridgeview, Rathfinny, and Stopham have established the region's reputation for traditional-method sparkling wines, while still wines from Bacchus and Pinot Noir are gaining attention. The region was awarded Protected Designation of Origin status, reinforcing its identity and quality standards.
The South Downs dominate the landscape with limestone chalk soils that extend the same Paris Basin geology found in Champagne. North of the downs, mineral-rich greensands add further complexity. Sussex is one of the sunniest and driest parts of England, with cool evening breezes preserving the high acidity that makes its sparkling wines so distinctive.
