Ștefan Vodă Vineyards
Southeastern Moldova, along the Dniester River and Black Sea-influenced plains

Ștefan Vodă

Moldova's red-wine heartland, where Black Sea breezes and iron-rich soils create mineral, age-worthy wines.

Overview

Ștefan Vodă lies in southeastern Moldova, where terraces along the Dniester River, gentle plains, and rolling slopes meet the moderating influence of the Black Sea. The region is traditionally regarded as the home of Moldova's finest red wines, including the historic Negru de Purcari blend from the Purcari micro-zone, which has been celebrated since the nineteenth century.

The climate is warm and moderately continental, with long sunny days and cooling maritime breezes that preserve acidity. Soils of podzolized and carbonated chernozem, often with clay and iron-rich loam, lend structure, minerality, and aging potential to the wines. Indigenous Rară Neagră finds one of its finest expressions here, alongside a range of red and white varieties.

Key Varietals

  • Rară NeagrăAn indigenous red variety that reaches exceptional depth here, with sour cherry, spice, and silky tannins.
  • Fetească NeagrăA historic Moldovan red producing concentrated, aromatic wines with dark berry and smoky notes.
  • MerlotA versatile red that adds plum, chocolate, and soft texture to regional blends and varietal wines.
  • Pinot GrisA pink-skinned white variety that yields aromatic, textural wines with stone-fruit and floral character.
