Štajerska

The heart of Slovenian Styria, famous for aromatic whites, the world's oldest vine, and the rare Štajerska Ranina.

Overview

Štajerska, also known as Slovenian Styria, is the largest wine district in Slovenia and the core of Podravje. Its hills and terraces around Maribor, Ptuj, Ljutomer-Ormož, and Haloze have been cultivated since Roman times and include the Old Vine of Maribor, recognized as the world's oldest producing grapevine. The climate is cool continental with sub-Pannonian warmth and Alpine freshness.

Sandy-clay and loamy soils over marl and limestone give wines precision, floral aromatics, and bright acidity. Alongside Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris, and Gewürztraminer, the local Štajerska Ranina adds a distinctive aromatic profile. The district is also renowned for sparkling penina and botrytized late-harvest wines.

Key Varietals

  • Štajerska RaninaA local aromatic white variety that gives fragrant, fresh wines with floral and fruity lift unique to Styria.
  • Sauvignon BlancA crisp, aromatic white producing herbaceous, citrus-driven wines with mineral backbone in Styria's cool sites.
  • Pinot GrisA pink-skinned variety yielding elegant, aromatic whites with stone-fruit, almond, and spice notes.
  • GewürztraminerAn intensely aromatic white that produces lychee, rose, and ginger-scented dry and off-dry wines.
