Stags Leap

Overview

The Stags Leap District is a small, steep-sided AVA on the eastern side of Napa Valley, best known for the dramatic volcanic palisades that rise above its vineyards. The district benefits from reflected heat off the cliffs, cool evening breezes from San Pablo Bay, and a unique mix of volcanic and river-sediment soils. It gained global fame in 1976 when a Stags Leap Cabernet Sauvignon won the Judgment of Paris tasting.

Cabernet Sauvignon is the star, producing wines that are often described as combining power with elegance: rich dark fruit, fine tannins, and a plush, supple texture. Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petite Sirah, and Sauvignon Blanc are also important. The wines are generally more approachable in youth than mountain Cabs yet age beautifully.
