Overview
Sopron is Hungary's westernmost wine district, pressed against the Austrian border and sharing climate, culture, and grape varieties with Burgenland. Lake Fertő, known as Neusiedlersee on the Austrian side, moderates temperatures, while the nearby Alps bring cool air and wind that keep acidity bright and tannins restrained.
Kékfrankos, Hungary's name for Blaufränkisch, accounts for roughly two-thirds of red plantings, producing a 'northern style' of red with red berry fruit, fresh spice, and lively acidity. Zweigelt, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc add depth, while Zöldveltelini, Chardonnay, and Irsai Olivér keep the white wine tradition alive.
Key Varietals
- KékfrankosThe star of Sopron, making medium-bodied, high-acid reds with cranberry, sour cherry, and pepper notes.

- ZöldvelteliniHungarian Grüner Veltliner that produces crisp, peppery whites with bright acidity and herbal lift.
- ChardonnayA fresh, mineral white that reflects Sopron's cool climate and calcareous, schist-influenced soils.
