Overview
Somló is Hungary's smallest wine district, centered on a lone basalt hill that rises abruptly from the flat Transdanubian landscape. The extinct volcano is capped with the ruins of a castle and surrounded by a mere handful of hectares of vineyards farmed by dedicated growers.
The region is famous for Juhfark, an indigenous white grape whose name means 'sheep's tail', which produces intense, smoky, mineral wines with remarkable aging potential. Hárslevelű, Furmint, and Olaszrizling also thrive here, making Somló a destination for collectors seeking distinctive volcanic whites.
