Snake River Valley

Overview

The Snake River Valley AVA covers much of southwestern Idaho and a small portion of eastern Oregon, making it the largest wine region in Idaho. Vineyards sit at roughly 2,100 to 3,400 feet elevation on a basin floor surrounded by mountains, far from Pacific maritime influence. The high altitude creates intense sunlight, a short growing season, and dramatic day-night temperature swings.

Riesling, Chardonnay, Gewurztraminer, and Syrah are the leading varieties, though Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Tempranillo are increasingly planted. Irrigation from the Snake River is essential in the semi-arid climate. The region's cold winters can damage vines, but also allow for ice wine production in suitable vintages.
