Overview
Skopje is the northernmost wine district of Povardarie, with vineyards spread across the foothills and slopes that ring the capital. Archaeological artefacts from Roman Skupi and the Skopje Fortress confirm that wine has been made here for many centuries. Today, urban tasting rooms and nearby estates make it one of the most accessible wine destinations in the country.
Vineyards lie between 250 and 600 meters on wavy, sloping terrain with exposures that capture ample sunshine. The climate is continental-sub-Mediterranean, with hot summers and cold winters, while soils are mostly moist clay with stony sub-soil, along with cinnamon and alluvial patches. Chateau Kamnik and other leading producers have helped put Skopje on the map for polished blends and expressive single-varietal wines.
