Shanxi Vineyards
Shanxi Province, China

Shanxi

A continental plateau region where Grace Vineyard helped pioneer modern Chinese fine wine.

Overview

Shanxi lies on the Loess Plateau in northern China, with vineyards concentrated around Taigu and the Qinshui Basin. The continental climate brings cold winters and warm summers, and vines must typically be buried each winter to survive. Grace Vineyard, founded in 1997, is the region's best-known producer and a pioneer of Chinese fine wine.

Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Marselan, and Chardonnay are the main varieties, producing wines with ripe fruit, firm structure, and increasing polish. The region's loess soils and high diurnal temperature shifts help grapes retain acidity while achieving full ripeness.

Key Varietals

  • Cabernet SauvignonA structured red with dark fruit and spice from Shanxi's continental sites.
  • MarselanA modern red variety that produces aromatic, medium-bodied wines.
  • MerlotA soft, fruity red widely planted across the region's vineyards.
  • ChardonnayA crisp white with citrus and orchard fruit notes.
