Shandong

Overview

Shandong is China's largest wine-producing region by volume, accounting for roughly one-third of the country's wine output. The Shandong Peninsula, particularly around Yantai and Penglai, has a long winemaking history and a maritime monsoon climate with wet summers and mild winters that do not require vines to be buried for winter protection.

Changyu, China's oldest winery, was founded here in 1892, and the region remains home to Great Wall, Chateau Changyu Castel, and the LVMH-backed Domaine de Long Dai. Cabernet Gernischt, Chardonnay, Riesling, and Merlot are widely planted, along with increasing experiments with Petit Manseng and other varieties.
