Overview
The Santa Ynez Valley is a broad, east-west valley in Santa Barbara County that contains several nested AVAs, including Sta. Rita Hills, Ballard Canyon, Los Olivos District, and Happy Canyon. The western end is heavily influenced by Pacific fog and wind, while the eastern end is warmer and drier. This climatic range allows the valley to produce an unusually wide spectrum of wine styles.
Chardonnay is the most planted variety overall, followed by Pinot Noir in the cooler west and Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, and Grenache in the warmer east. The valley gained popular recognition from the film Sideways and has since become one of California's most visited wine destinations.
