Russian River Valley

Overview

The Russian River Valley AVA lies in the southern portion of Sonoma County, extending along the Russian River from Healdsburg to Sebastopol. Coastal fog funnels inland through the Petaluma Gap each morning, burning off by midday to reveal warm afternoon sun. This slow, cool ripening pattern is ideal for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, which together dominate plantings.

The prized Goldridge fine sandy loam is the region's most celebrated soil, providing excellent drainage and moderate vigor. Zinfandel, Sauvignon Blanc, Gewurztraminer, and Syrah are also grown, particularly on warmer sites, but Pinot Noir remains the defining grape. The valley produces wines of elegance, bright acidity, and clear site expression.
