Overview
Rueda sits on the Castilian plateau at around 600 to 800 meters, a high, windswept region with cold winters, hot days, and cool nights. The poor, gravelly soils force vines to root deeply, yielding low crops of intensely flavored grapes. The area was revived in the 1970s by producers who saw Verdejo's potential for fresh, modern white wines.
Verdejo is the undisputed star, producing whites with citrus, fennel, and mineral character that can be enjoyed young or aged. Viura and Sauvignon Blanc are also grown, often blended for added freshness and aromatics. Rueda has become the benchmark region for Spanish dry white wine.
