Rhine Valley Vineyards
Liechtenstein's sole wine-growing area, on the southwest-facing slopes of the Upper Rhine Valley around Vaduz

Rhine Valley

The world's smallest wine-producing country concentrates its entire viticulture into one sun-drenched Alpine valley along the Rhine.

Overview

Liechtenstein is the world's smallest wine-producing country, yet its vineyards trace back more than 2,000 years to Celtic and Roman times. All of the country's commercial viticulture sits in the Rhine Valley, a narrow strip of southwest-facing slopes wedged between Switzerland and Austria. The centerpiece is the Herawingert vineyard above Vaduz, whose four hectares of old vines are still cultivated by hand and represent the heart of Liechtenstein wine.

The valley's mild, foehn-influenced climate, roughly 1,500 hours of annual sunshine, and slate-limestone soils create ideal conditions for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Small family estates and the princely Hofkellerei keep production tiny and quality focused, turning out fresh, mineral whites and elegant, red-berry Pinot Noirs from one of Europe's most singular wine terroirs.

Key Varietals

  • Pinot NoirThe flagship red, locally called Blauburgunder, giving elegant red-berry wines with fine tannins and a mineral finish.
  • ChardonnayThe leading white, thriving on calcareous and slate soils for fresh, precise, Burgundian-style wines.
  • Müller-ThurgauA reliable aromatic white that ripens well in the mild valley climate and adds floral, fruity charm.
  • RieslingA crisp, high-acid white that reflects the valley's cool nights and stony, mineral soils.
