Primorska

Overview

Primorska is Slovenia's most prominent wine region, accounting for a large share of the country's production and international reputation. It stretches from the Gulf of Trieste inland to the Italian border, divided into four districts: Goriška Brda, Vipava Valley, Kras, and Slovenian Istria. The climate is sub-Mediterranean, with hot, dry summers, mild winters, and the fierce Burja wind that reduces disease pressure and preserves acidity.

Vineyards sit on flysch and limestone hills, often on terraced slopes, where the locally named opoka soils of marl, sandstone, and clay provide excellent drainage and mineral complexity. Indigenous grapes such as Rebula and Malvazija sit alongside Refošk and Merlot, yielding everything from fresh whites and skin-contact amber wines to age-worthy reds.
