Overview
Povardarie is the country's central viticultural region, stretching along the Vardar River and producing roughly 80 to 87 percent of North Macedonia's wine. The valley lies at similar latitudes to Bordeaux, Tuscany and Napa Valley, with vineyards between 50 and 600 meters on gentle slopes, terraces and flat river plains. It is the engine room of Macedonian viticulture, home to historic estates and modern wineries alike.
The climate is Mediterranean to continental, with mild winters, hot summers and more than 120 days a year above 25°C. The Vardarec wind funnels along the valley, aiding ventilation and reducing disease pressure. Soils are diverse, including diluvial and alluvial plains, crvenica, limestone-carbonate, sandy-gravel and sandy-clay. This range supports both indigenous varieties and international grapes in a wide spectrum of styles.
