Overview
Posavje lies in the southeast of Slovenia, following the Sava, Krka, and Kolpa rivers toward Croatia. It comprises three districts: Dolenjska, Bizeljsko-Sremič, and Bela Krajina. The landscape is hilly and dotted with traditional vineyard cottages called zidanice, with a cool continental climate influenced by Alpine and sub-Pannonian air masses.
Soils are diverse, ranging from marl, sandstone, and limestone to dolomite and red clay. The region's signature wine is Cviček, a light, tart, low-alcohol blend of red and white grapes traditionally enjoyed in Dolenjska. Modra Frankinja, Žametovka, and Rumeni Plavec are also important, while traditional-method sparkling wines are gaining recognition.
