Overview

Podravje covers Slovenia's northeastern wine country, including the districts of Štajerska Slovenija and Prekmurje. Its rolling hills sit between 250 and 400 meters above sea level, where a temperate continental climate with sub-Pannonian influence brings warm summers, cold winters, and significant day-night temperature shifts. This is white-wine territory, with roughly 93 percent of vineyards planted to aromatic varieties.

Soils formed on carbonate bedrock and Pleistocene loams, with sandy clay and marl, provide excellent conditions for elegant, varietally expressive wines. Šipon, Laški Rizling, Renski Rizling, and Traminec are the classic grapes, producing everything from crisp everyday whites to late-harvest and ice-wine specialties.
