Overview
Penedès is Catalonia's most productive and internationally known wine region, a coastal-to-mountain district just southwest of Barcelona. It divides into three altitude zones: Baix Penedès near the warm coast, Mitja Penedès in the middle hills, and Alt Penedès up to 800 meters where the freshest whites and Cava grapes thrive. The region is a hub of innovation and home to many of Spain's most experimental wineries.
Xarel·lo is the emblematic local white, structured and aromatic, while Macabeo and Parellada dominate Cava blends. Red wines are made from Tempranillo, Garnacha, Monastrell, and international varieties. Penedès produces still, sparkling, and fortified wines in a range of styles that reflect its varied microclimates.
