Overview
Pannonhalma is one of Hungary's oldest wine regions, with documented viticulture dating to the founding of the Benedictine abbey in 996. The Sokoro Hills in the Bakony range have been planted since Roman times, and the UNESCO-listed Pannonhalma Archabbey remains the region's most important producer and cultural anchor.
Traditionally a white wine region, Pannonhalma is known for aromatic Olaszrizling, crisp Riesling, and expressive Chardonnay, alongside Pinot Noir, which performs surprisingly well in the cool climate. The loess soils, moderate sunshine, and monastic heritage give the wines a clean, balanced, slightly Old World character.
Key Varietals
- OlaszrizlingThe most planted variety, producing fragrant, medium-bodied whites with green apple and almond notes.
- RieslingA high-acid white that develops petrol, lime, and floral aromas on Pannonhalma's loess and limestone slopes.
- ChardonnayA clean, mineral white that responds well to barrel aging and shows ripe citrus and subtle spice.
- Pinot NoirA cool-climate red that yields elegant, red-berry wines with silky tannins and earthy undertones.
