Overview
The Old Mission Peninsula AVA is a nineteen-mile-long, three-mile-wide peninsula that extends north into Grand Traverse Bay. The water on both sides creates a powerful lake-effect climate that moderates temperatures, reduces frost risk, and extends the growing season. Established in 1987, it is Michigan's smallest AVA and one of its most picturesque.
Riesling is the most celebrated variety, often produced in dry and off-dry styles with bright acidity and stone fruit. Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio, Pinot Noir, Gewurztraminer, and Cabernet Franc are also widely grown. The gently sloping vineyards and well-drained glacial soils help concentrate flavors in the short, cool growing season.
