Ohrid Vineyards
Southwestern North Macedonia, on the shores of UNESCO-listed Lake Ohrid in the Pelagonija-Polog wine region

Ohrid

A lakeside mountain terroir where one of Europe's oldest lakes moderates vineyards and ancient wine traditions endure.

Overview

The Ohrid wine district lies in the western viticultural region of Pelagonija-Polog, around Lake Ohrid, one of the oldest lakes in Europe. Archaeological finds at Trebenista, including a bronze wine krater and golden cups from the 5th and 6th centuries BCE, show that wine held ceremonial importance here long before the arrival of the Romans. Orthodox monasteries later preserved viticulture through the Ottoman period.

Vineyards sit at moderate to high altitudes on undulating, south-facing slopes, where the lake tempers both summer heat and winter cold. The climate blends Mediterranean, mountain and continental influences, while soils are mainly diluvial, brown and cinnamonic. The result is fresh reds, crisp whites and a growing number of cool-climate, site-driven wines.

Key Varietals

  • VranecPlanted in cooler lakeside sites, it yields reds with bright acidity, red berry fruit and fine tannins.
  • SmederevkaA refreshing white that produces light, citrusy wines ideal for warm days by the lake.
  • ŽilavkaA textured Balkan white showing green apple, almond and herbal notes on Ohrid's slopes.
  • ChardonnayA barrel-friendly white that develops ripe stone fruit and subtle vanilla in the lake-moderated climate.
