North Brabant

Overview

North Brabant lies between the Limburg wine heartland and the Belgian border, with a small but growing band of vineyards concentrated in its southern and eastern fringes. The province is better known for high-tech industry and Trappist beer, but growers are increasingly planting sheltered plots with disease-resistant hybrids.

The landscape is dominated by the sandy heathlands of De Kempen and the former peat moors of De Peel, with more fertile pockets along rivers and streams. The soils are generally lighter and quicker-draining than in the river provinces, so growers select early-ripening varieties and pay close attention to water retention.
