Overview
Neusiedlersee is a wine region on the eastern shore of the shallow Lake Neusiedl in Burgenland. The lake's morning mists create ideal conditions for noble rot, making this one of the world's great regions for sweet, botrytized wines.
Beyond dessert wines, Neusiedlersee also produces powerful Blaufränkisch and Zweigelt from the region's heavy soils. The contrast between lusciously sweet whites and deeply colored reds makes this one of Austria's most diverse wine destinations.
Key Varietals
- WelschrieslingThe base for Neusiedlersee's famed botrytized sweet wines, honeyed and complex.
- BlaufränkischA bold, spicy red with dark fruit and firm tannins from the region's warmer sites.
- ZweigeltA soft, fruity red with plum and cherry flavors.
- ScheurebeAn aromatic white used for both dry wines and rich dessert styles.
