Mostar

Overview

Mostar is the largest city in Herzegovina and the natural starting point for the Herzegovina Wine Route, a network of more than twenty wineries spread across six municipalities. The region's Mediterranean climate, 400-plus sunny days per year, and thin red soils over karst limestone create ideal conditions for the indigenous white grape Žilavka and the red grape Blatina.

Wineries cluster in and around Mostar itself and in nearby villages such as Međugorje and Čitluk, a short drive to the southwest. Visitors typically combine wine tastings with the city's famous Ottoman-era bridge, historic bazaar, and local restaurants that pair Herzegovinian wines with grilled river trout, prosciutto, and aged cheese.
