Montsant

The Priorat ring, where old-vine Garnacha and Cariñena deliver bold wines at gentler prices.

Overview

Montsant forms a rough ring around the prestigious Priorat DOCa, sharing much of the same mountainous landscape and winemaking heritage. The region was granted its own DO in 2001, though wine has been made here for centuries. Soils vary from limestone and clay on the periphery to pockets of slate and granite closer to Priorat.

Garnacha and Cariñena dominate, producing concentrated, spicy reds with dark fruit and mineral depth. Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot are also common in blends. Montsant offers many of the qualities of Priorat at more accessible prices, alongside fresh whites from Garnatxa Blanca and Macabeo.

Key Varietals

  • GarnachaThe leading red grape, giving Montsant its ripe berry, spice, and warm structure.
  • CariñenaAn old-vine variety that adds bright acidity, red fruit, and savory complexity.
  • SyrahAn international grape contributing dark fruit, pepper, and density to blends.
  • Cabernet SauvignonA blending variety that brings cassis, tannin, and aging potential.
