Mátra

Overview

Mátra is Hungary's largest hilly wine district, spread across the sun-drenched southern slopes of the country's highest mountain range northeast of Budapest. The mountains shelter vineyards from cold northerly winds, while volcanic andesite and rhyolite tuff soils add mineral complexity to the region's fragrant whites.

Aromatic varieties thrive here, especially Irsai Olivér, Cserszegi Fűszeres, and Királyleányka, which produce fresh, perfumed, easy-drinking wines. Chardonnay, Olaszrizling, and Hárslevelű also appear, and a small revival of Kadarka, Kékfrankos, and Pinot Noir is adding new red options to the district.
